Some race cars become famous for what they won. The Fulton & Bennett “Bad Attitude” 1941 Willys Gasser became famous for the race it was never allowed to run.

Built by legendary engine builder Gene Fulton and veteran drag racing journalist Bobby Bennett, the Willys was created to compete in the Southeast Gassers Association. The car was built from scratch in less than three months, earning it another nickname: “The Three Month Wonder.”

There was just one problem.

The Willys was denied entry into competition after the series promoter, who also competed in the same class, ruled the car had technical violations that made it ineligible.

Then Fulton and Bennett took the car testing.

The clocks told a pretty convincing story.

While the front-running cars in the class were running in the 5.70-second range in the eighth-mile, the Fulton & Bennett Willys ripped off passes in the 5.30s.

Maybe keeping it out wasn't such a bad decision after all.

Powered by a 421-cubic-inch Fulton Competition Race Engines small-block producing more than 900 horsepower, the lightweight Willys became an old-school wheelstanding handful that looked every bit as wild as it ran.

The car's combination of attitude, performance and its rapid-fire construction eventually landed the Fulton & Bennett Willys in HOT ROD Magazine, including the cover of the December 2014 issue.
