Rickie Smith had just won the first round in his Oak Ridge Boys-sponsored Mustang II when an IHRA official greeted him in the shutdown area at Rockingham Dragway. He never gave Smith his time slip; he hooked up his golf cart to the Mountain Motor Pro Stocker and towed him back to the starting line.

A puzzled Smith, who had already won multiple championships in IHRA sportsman competition, believed he was in trouble. Instead, he was presented with a time slip by IHRA President Larry Carrier, second signifying he had made the first legal 7-second Pro Stock run in drag racing history. There had been others, but Smith was the first official to break the barrier at the 1980 IHRA Pro Am Nationals.

In a special agreement with the legendary doorslammer racer, the CompetitionPlusStore.com presents a retro t-shirt of the car he made so famous. We only offer these in black, and a limited number are available, so don't miss your chance.

We will not ship for until at least February 5, 2024, but have been innundated with requests, so we are opening up for pre-orders.
